What is IGS?
IGS refers to a file associated with IGES or Initial Graphics Exchange Specification. It is a graphics format for 2D and 3D vector images that is used by various CAD or computer-aided design applications for the purposes of saving and/or exporting data. The IGES file format has .IGS file extensions and it is a format standard when it comes to the transfer of 3D models between various CAD programs.

The IGES format with .IGS file extension was first published back in 1980 but has already started development a year earlier. Various representatives from the CAD industry worked hand in hand with the US Department of Defense and National Bureau of Standards to come up with a standard format to handle 2D and 3D vector graphics between different CAD platforms. Companies such as Applicon, General Electric, Boeing, Xerox, and Computervision were part of the IGES project headed by the US NBS. A year after they started developing the IGES project with IGS file extension, the first version was published.

With IGS files as standard format, various applications are able to handle and open them regardless of operating system or platform. For users using Mac OS, IMSI TurboCAD Deluxe and Nemetschek VectorWorks are able to open files with IGS extensions. These two programs can also be installed on Windows operating systems and are also able to handle IGS files. Other compatible programs under Windows OS include Oracle AutoVue, Autodesk Inventor Fusion, Actify Spinfire Professional, and ACD Systems Canvas 12 among various others.

If users encounter IGS files and don’t know what to do with them, it is suggested to let the computer select the proper program that can open it. This advice is especially applicable to those who are not familiar with CAD-related programs. But in case the user suspects that this file might be corrupted or a virus, immediate removal of the program associated with it is recommended.
