Secret City: The Illegal Architecture of Tawian
معماری Secret City: The Illegal Architecture of Tawian http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...itecture-1.jpg Beyond the ‘official city’ of Taipei, where modernization and beautification efforts are glossing over the city’s natural and historical origins, there’s Instant City. Using Taipei’s conventional modern architecture as a platform and energy source, this network of illegal architecture attaches itself ‘like a parasite’ to create unsanctioned urban farms, night markets and other social gathering places. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...itecture-2.jpg The project is spearheaded by a loose collective of architects calling themselves ‘WEAK!’ after ‘weak architecture’, their term for the vibrant, organic and often transient structures that sprout up on top of the strong, industrial base city of Taipei. They believe that the two can and should co-exist, and that these illegal pop-ups preserve the “natural wisdom” of the hundreds of thousands of Chinese people who have moved from the countryside to the cities. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...itecture-3.jpg For example, there’s the Bug Dome – an “un-official social club for illegal workers coming from the Chinese countryside to the city. This small pavilion was constructed mainly by some very sensitive guys from rural Guangxi, true masters of bamboo. The Bug Dome is insect architecture merely reorganizing natural materials into a nest or cocoon.” http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...itecture-4.jpg Treasure Hill was an illegal hillside community built by and for the people who occupy some of the lowest rungs of Taiwan’s social ladder, before it was ‘beautified’ into an artists’ village. Atop the Ruin Academy – an abandoned 5-story building taken over by architecture, design, sociology and environmental professors and students for workshops on sustainable urbanism – WEAK! has created an illegal wood-beam ‘cocoon’ using no nails. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...itecture-5.jpg “If this volume of Local Knowledge that is now pouring into the Chinese cities would be recognized, the new Chinese urbanism would have a change to create something seriously new and environmentally sustainable,” says architect Marco Casagrande, who participated in the project. Open House(s): 10 Wonderful Open-Plan Home Designs
معماری Open House(s): 10 Wonderful Open-Plan Home Designs http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...plan-homes.jpg There are few design concepts more widely integrated in modern architecture than the idea of openness. When architects work with open designs, they not only allow the residents more flexibility in their living space, they also create homes that feel more spacious and luxurious than their tightly closed-in counterparts. Minimalist Box Home http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...dern-cabin.jpg This stunningly simple house by Primus Arkitekter of Denmark consists of a few interlocking boxes adorned with weathered wood on the exterior and plain white paint on the interior. The wooden outer walls provide a perfect contrast to the simple, modern interiors -a counterpoint which makes the small home seem far larger than it actually is. Concrete and Wood Cabin http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...rior-walls.jpg By combining cool concrete and warm wood, this cozy cabin by BAK Architects is ready to comfort residents all year long. Stairs, cabinets and furniture all seamlessly blend into the greater overall design, seeming to flow gently from the walls themselves. The use of seamed concrete meshes amicably with the grainy wooden slats and hints at stretching expanses of space that may just go on forever. Open Concrete Box house http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...e-exterior.jpg Like BAK Architects, designers at Architects Brauning understand that concrete doesn’t have to be a cold, unwelcoming material. Hard steel, brushed concrete and glass walls give this house a distinctively industrial feel, but the open interior, adorned with bright orange flooring and stacks of logs, gives it a warm, welcoming atmosphere –one heavy in contrasts. The sharp lines and inspired contrasts make the house distinctively modern, but still cozy enough to be called home. Glass on Concrete Underground Home http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...st-house-1.jpg It’s hard to create a room more open to the outside world than the glass-framed living space sitting atop this concrete home. Perhaps that’s why Alberto Baeza decided to counterbalance this highly visible upper level with the secure, private concrete bunker below. This concrete and glass masterpiece is a perfect setting for anyone who enjoys a great view but still wants to have plenty of privacy as they participate in their normal, day to day activities. Bridge House http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...idge-house.jpg Architect Max Pritchard had quite a challenge ahead of him when presented with this stunning setting for a new home. How could he possibly build something that would allow the owners to enjoy the gently flowing stream, ancient red gum trees and rocky slopes of their property without disturbing any of the natural beauty? His solution was an industrial-looking house on stilts that somehow manages to look perfectly in place with the serene setting. By gently nestling the home inside the small canyon, Pritchard was able to minimize its visibility from a distance. As you close in on the home, the simple and boxy design, covered in recycled metal, makes the structure almost appear like an abandoned railroad bridge, ensuring it still seems perfectly at ease in its setting. High Desert Oasis http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ome-design.jpg The slopping, rust-colored roofs of this dramatic desert home bring to mind images of antique barns of the Old West, but upon closer inspection, this design by Rick Joy is one hundred percent modern. Inside the rusted roof and rammed-earth walls are walls made entirely of glass, allowing residents to take in the picturesque views of snow-capped mountains. An edgeless pool is ready to help visitors cool down after a hike across the stunning desert landscape. As much as the home fits in with its surroundings, it also serves as an ideal escape from the area’s harsh realities. Modular Modern Masterpiece http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...odern-home.jpg The pure simplicity of this tiny summer home is exactly what makes the design by Tommie Wilhelmsen so brilliant. By taking advantage of small nooks and crannies, he ensures there is adequate living spaces without isolating and cramping any areas of the small building. While many people would find the house a little too small for year-round enjoyment, it is precisely this quality that makes it such a welcome, comforting summer home –inviting residents to leave their worries, and extra possessions, elsewhere. Lofted Combination Home and Office http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...odern-home.jpg Architects Angelo Bucci and Alvaro Puntoni took advantage of the severe drop off of this piece of property to create a refreshingly unique combination live-work space. Much of the house is hidden away below street level, giving the residents ample privacy. At the same time, the open heart of the design allows in ample light and fresh air, preventing any sense of isolation or stuffiness. One of the most distinct features of the design though is the massive, lofted office space hovering above the rest of the home and accessible only through a metal staircase. This concept is not only attractive, but it also helps keep a distinct separation between the home and office space, helping residents keep a strong distinction between their work and home life. Modern Hillside Manor http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ior-design.jpg Like the lofted home above, this Hollywood home takes full advantage of challenging natural topography. Designers at Xten Architecture used retaining walls and a massive hillside to create a private inner space that is still provided with natural light and air. On the other side of the building, the house juts out from the mountainside, offering unbelievable views of the city below with its floor-to-ceiling window walls. Multi-Leveled Bookcase Home http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...rior-walls.jpg Anyone with an affinity for books will instantly appreciate this architectural marvel devoted to literary extravagance. Architects at grupoSP designed this open-plan library home for some true book lovers who own enough books to fill three floors worth of shelves. Of course, the bookshelves aren’t the only interesting part of this floor plan. Floating metal mesh walkways, two full walls of windows and frequent gaps in the concrete walls allow ample mobility and privacy in the home while still taking full advantage of natural light. Lollipop House: Striped and Candy-Bright in South Korea
معماری Lollipop House: Striped and Candy-Bright in South Korea http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...op-house-1.jpg Standing out as comically absurd in a cityscape of unremarkable beige buildings, the Lollipop House by architect Moon Hoon is absolutely one-of-a-kind. With its odd shape and nearly windowless facade, the home in Giheung-Gu, South Korea can seem a bit impractical, but the interior is surprisingly bright and welcoming. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...op-house-2.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...op-house-3.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...op-house-6.jpg Though it looks no more than two stories from the outside, the Lollipop House contains no less than seven staggered levels from the kitchen on the first floor to various living areas, bedrooms, an attic playroom and even an upper level AV room. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...op-house-4.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...op-house-5.jpg According to Inhabitat, Moon Hoon used timber and metal rather than the concrete construction that is standard in South Korea, and metals that are easily recyclable and more affordable. The house has a radiant floor heating system, and the central staircase leads up to a large skylight that fills the home with energy-efficient daylighting. Want More? Red People: Wood Block Figures Take Over Moscow
معماری Red People: Wood Block Figures Take Over Moscow http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...d-people-1.jpg Thirteen red blocks provide endless possibilities for stick-figure people to ride scooters, pose, hold objects and cling to the sides of buildings. These ‘Red People’ have spread throughout the city of Moscow as part of a unique project by Russian art collective Pprofessors, and are even starting to infiltrate politics and popular culture. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...d-people-2.jpg Each set of thirteen blocks used to build a ‘red person’ may be small, creating no more than a 12-inch-tall figurine, or oversized, so that they tower above pedestrians on the streets. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...d-people-3.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...d-people-5.jpg Collacubed translated the designers’ text from Russian, learning that the Red People have become a viral phenomenon since appearing throughout the city, and have even become comic book characters. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...d-people-4.jpg After appearing at the Gridchinhall Gallery in 2010, some of the figures now permanently reside on the grounds, including one perched on the roof over the gallery’s entrance. Color-Changing Tile to Create Transforming Spaces
معماری Color-Changing Tile to Create Transforming Spaces http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tive-tiles.jpg The tiles that line your bathroom might be nice to look at, but what do they actually do? The color-changing tiles from Moving Color take a regular bathroom and make it into an ever-changing work of art. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ower-tiles.jpg (image via: Apartment Therapy) Moving Color’s products turn their environments into dynamic and ever-changing spaces by reacting to ambient temperatures. They start out as one color when cool, then slowly change color as they warm up. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ging-tiles.jpg (image via: Moving Color) The glass tiles, made of 20-80% recycled materials, change colors in gradual steps through the color spectrum as they warm up. Whether the warmth is applied through hot water, the touch of a warm hand or simply the rising air temperature in a room, the changes result in a spectacular hypercolor display. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tile-paths.jpg (image via: BrainStorm) Although the obvious applications would seem to be wall coverings in bathrooms and kitchens – the two rooms in the home that undergo the most extreme temperature changes – the heat-sensitive tiles could be used in a multitude of applications. The manufacturer suggests using them for artful displays on walls or floors, or even as creative elements in children’s books. Want More? Maids of the Mist: 15 Steamy Humidifier Designs
معماری Maids of the Mist: 15 Steamy Humidifier Designs http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...fiers_main.jpg Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could mist it… and these 15 humidifier designs will ensure you do just that. Running the gamut from cute to clever, these cool steam dream machines will bring you back up when dry air’s got you down. Wool Ball Hybrid Humidifier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_1a.jpg(images via: Coroflot and EcoFriend) It’s a humidifier! It’s a cat toy! It’s… both? Yes indeed, the Wool Ball Hybrid Humidifier from Cincinnati-based designer Yuan Gu humidifies your home while entertaining your poor, bored, house-bound kitty cat. Maybe “entertaining” isn’t the right word… by playing with this self-contained, kinetic-powered orb your cat will actually be doing some work for a change – just don’t tell it. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_1b.jpg(images via: Coroflot and EcoFriend) The Wool Ball Hybrid Humidifier functions in either of two modes. Placed on a small pedestal and plugged into a nearby electrical outlet it spews mist much like run-of-the-mill home humidifiers. Unplugged and switched on via the integral LCD control panel, it’s free to roll around the floor under the impetus of the resident feline. Though the interior fan runs on a kinetic power source, we much prefer to call it “kitten-powered”. Mast Humidifier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...idifiers_2.jpg(images via: Rakuten) Designed by Shin Okada and crafted from natural Hinoki (Japanese Cypress) wood by Masuya Koubou, the Mast Humidifier adds beauty to one’s home yet doesn’t subtract any electrical power from the grid. Just assemble the humidifier’s components, fill the “hull” base with water, and natural capillary action plus evaporation does the rest. No on/off switch is needed – water won’t evaporate into an already-humid room environment. Bonus: natural Hinoki wood exudes a fresh, lemony aroma and is resistant to rot, mildew and decay. Penguin Humidifier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_3a.jpg(images via: Joe Shlabotnik, Remodel This House and Chris Moseley) The Adorable Humidifier from Crane is an ultrasonic cool-mist humidifier ideal for infants and children’s rooms. A removable 1-gallon tank can be filled with tap water and runs quietly for up to 11 hours – when the tank’s dry the humidifier shuts off automatically. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_3b.jpg(image via: Eliduke) Costing around $30 and available at most major retailers, the Adorable Humidifier is a perfect example of a clever concept making the transition to successful retail consumer product. Don’t like penguins? No problem, the design is also available in Cow, Elephant, Frog, Pig, and Hello Kitty livery. Sauna Boy Portable Mini Humidifier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...idifiers_4.jpg(images via: Good Design Products and Special Election Now) The Sauna Boy Portable Mini Humidifier blows off steam so you won’t have to! Combining the functions of a humidifier, an aroma diffuser and an air purifier, this compact USB-powered device goes anywhere you and your laptop may roam. An especially neat feature are the decals included with each humidifier that allow you to design your Sauna Boy’s unique facial expression. Middle Colors Humidifier Supersonic Wave http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_5a.jpg(images via: Japan Trend Shop and Rakuten) With a name like Middle Colors Humidifier Supersonic Wave, it’s got to be Japanese – and it is. Even better, this organically curved and beautifully tinted humidifier comes with a matching remote control. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_5b.jpg(images via: InventorSpot and Rakuten) The AC-powered Middle Colors Humidifier Supersonic Wave is designed by Hironao Tsuboi and will run for up to 8 hours on a full tank of tap water. The remote control allows users to select from three settings: Low, Medium and Strong. Seriously, with a setting called “Strong” you know dryness doesn’t stand a chance. Cup Noodle USB Humidifier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...idifiers_6.jpg(images via: Strapya World and Gigazine) Nothing like a steaming Cup Noodle instant ramen to warm the ****les while working late, amiright? What’s also true is that office air can get uncomfortably dry in cooler months. What to do? Set up a Cup Shitsuki ultrasonic humidifier on your desktop, plug it in to your comp via the handy USB connector (or AC adapter) and enjoy moist, soothing mist – calorie-free. R2D2 USB Humidifier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_7a.jpg(images via: Shop NCSX and Technabob) The R2D2 USB Humidifier begs the question: how does one humidify the chill vacuum of interstellar space? While you’re chewing on that one, Chewbacca, consider the fact that the interiors of spaceships (not to mention the cramped confines of Mom’s basement) can get to feeling uncomfortably droid… er, dried. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_7b.jpg(image via: Trendhunter) Just twist off R2′s head (ignore his pitiable bleeping and blooping) and fill him up with water… hot water, preferably. That’s because this is an old-school steam humidifier that can take up to 20-25 minutes to warm up sufficiently to spew hot vaporized Dihydrogen monoxide into the air. Oskar Humidifier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...idifiers_8.jpg(images via: Generate and Gadget HIM) Be the first one on your block to own an Oskar Humidifier, which is appropriate since the Oskar Humidifier is shaped like a block. It even comes in bright green like the H & R Block logo, though at press time no lawsuits have been filed. Designed by Matti Walker, the Oskar Humidifier features an integrated hygrostat to maintain optimum humidity and automatically shuts off when the water tank is empty. Last but not least, an interior scented-oil container adds aromatherapy to its usual humidifying functionality. Stitch Humidifier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_9a.jpg(images via: Akihabara News and TIKI Stitch) Can you believe we’re coming up on the 10th anniversary of Lilo & Stitch? What better way to celebrate Disney’s 42nd animated feature than with a Stitch Humidifier? If you answered “a Lilo Humidifier”, you’re out of luck ’cause there isn’t one. You’re stuck with Stitch, like it or not, and there’s no use Hawaiian. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_9b.jpg(image via: Runat) The Stitch Humidifier runs off either a standard wall socket or via USB from your PC or laptop. It was available online for the princely sum of $179.80 but unfortunately (or fortunately, for the budget-conscious) it’s out of stock. Love Pot Aroma Humidifier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_10.jpg(image via: Trendhunter) The Love Pot Aroma Humidifier from Nanum is about as environmentally friendly as one can get. The design, by Sangmin Bae & ID+IM Design Lab, is non-electric and functions by natural wicking and evaporation. The red or blue heart-shaped moisture diffuser is made from laminated wool felt that can be safely laundered and re-used. best of all, Nanum promises that 100% of the profits from every Love Pot Aroma Humidifier sold are charitably donated to provide educational scholarships for impoverished children. Beer Can USB Humidifier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ifiers_11a.jpg(images via: Green House and ZAKKA Green) Just wait ’til your boss walks in one morning and spies a can of beer on your desk… that explains the quality of your work lately, he might think. Be sure to interrupt him while he’s filing out a pink slip and explain that the Beer Can USB Humidifier from Green House is, well, a Beer Can USB Humidifier made by Green House. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ifiers_11b.jpg(image via: Green House) Green House certainly stressed the detail on this device, down to using German script on the can – the “Grünhaus” name is a nice Teutonic twist. If your boss wants a closer look, let him have it and be sure to point out the “Clear Taste Humidifier” text inscribed beneath the label. After you both have a good laugh over your close encounter with unemployment, explain to him that he can type a ü or any other umlaut character on his keyboard by holding down the ALT key and typing 129 on the Numbers keypad. Fred Humidifier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_12.jpg(images via: SlipperyBrick and TechyChick) “Fred” seems like an incongruous name for a UFO-shaped humidifier… unless that’s just one part of it’s evil plan. The organic exterior of the device exudes a cool retro vibe while the insides boil water into soothing steam shot out through a brushed aluminum snout, er, spout. Available in your choice of 6 different colors, the Fred Humidifier offers High and Economy settings and is designed to run extra-quietly. Yep, you’ll sleep like a baby while our friend Fred is out mutilating cattle. Too Much Aroma Vaporiser http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ifiers_13a.jpg(images via: DeskStore and Made In Design) The Too Much Aroma Vaporiser from avant garde designer Karim Rashid and Lexon UK may look monolithic but it’s actually quite the multitasker as humidifiers go. Interior air is moisturized and perfumed, improving the atmosphere to promote feelings of well-being. The device also incorporates ambient LED lighting to further set the mood. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ifiers_13b.jpg(image via: Apartment Therapy) The Aroma Vaporiser is one of Karim Rashid’s “Too Much” collection, a wide-ranging series of interior lifestyle designs that include everything from dedicated LED lighting to custom computer mice. The Host Lamp http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_14.jpg(image via: TECH@mikeshouts) The Host Lamp by designer Minsung Bae is a curious concept: a humidifier powered by an incandescent light bulb. Here comes the science: A Thermo-Electric Module inside the device is made up of an aluminum heat sink that captures heat emanated by the light bulb and diverts it to a battery which then provides the power required to run the humidifier. The Host Lamp’s appearance is intriguing as well, being part rustic, slightly Steampunk and anything but commercial plastic. Steam Mug Eco-Friendly Mini Size Cup Humidifier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ifiers_15a.jpg(images via: Yanko Design and Zurmat) Your morning cuppa java won’t steam for long but the Steam Mug Eco-Friendly Mini Size Cup Humidifier will… as long as it’s switched on, at least. Designer Young-Suk Kim engineered the Steam Mug to run on very low water levels, such as what’s left after you return from the office water cooler, take a long sip or two, and get down to work. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ifiers_15b.jpg(image via: Yanko Design) The Steam Mug automatically turns on when its placed on the saucer-like holder that’s connected to a convenient USB port. The cool-mist ultrasonic functionality ensures you can still take sips from your cup without steaming your mouth shut. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...hiteblock1.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...difiers_EP.jpg(image via: ***Y Gadgets) Do humidifiers have to be high-tech to be cool? Not at all: take the plainly named Radiator Humidifier, for instance. Simply fill the plastic receptacle with water and hang it on your radiator using the integral hooks. No chemicals, no filters, no… radiator? Erm, never mind. Want More? Castle in a Grain of Sand: Tiny Nanoscale 3D Printing
معماری Castle in a Grain of Sand: Tiny Nanoscale 3D Printing http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...printing-1.jpg It’s a perfect replica of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, complete with each tiny peak and each window. But to the ***** eye, this object would look like no more than a grain of sand. The cathedral and other creations like it are among the smallest 3D objects ever to be printed, produced precisely at the nanoscale. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...printing-2.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...printing-3.jpg Researchers at the Vienna University of Technology have perfected the process of 3D printing on an amazingly tiny scale. Using technology called “two-photon lithography”, the researchers created a high-precision 3D printer that can print three-dimensional objects both smaller and faster than ever before. The printer uses movable mirrors to guide a laser beam through liquid resin; the laser hardens the resin into shape. The lines of resin created by the laser are no more than a few hundred nanometers wide. The mirrors move continuously throughout the printing process to create high-resolution objects at a record-breaking speed. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...printing-5.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...printing-6.jpg In addition to the printer itself and the technology required to develop it, innovations in the chemistry of the resin play a role in this achievement. “The resin contains molecules, which are activated by the laser light. Stylish And Sustainable: 8 Modern Eco-Friendly Homes
معماری Stylish And Sustainable: 8 Modern Eco-Friendly Homes http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-eco-homes.jpg There was a time when modernism was at odds with the organic designs of nature. As eco-consciousness has taken over the minds of the public, it has also spilled over into the design world, resulting in a new realm of modernist, green designs. From eco-friendly building materials to designs that minimize water and electricity use, these eight homes elegantly combine the stylish and sustainable. Cozy Concrete Home http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-home-form.jpg With concrete walls and living roofs, this stunning home by A Cero combines modern aesthetics with eco-friendly touches. The result is a seamless blending of contrasts: vivid earth tones balance the somber gray, white and black interior tones while lush grass softens the edges of hard concrete. Reclaimed Rough Lumber House http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...e-interior.jpg Using reclaimed old-growth softwood beams from buildings that no longer stand, this design by Omer Rarbel blends the old and the new in an unforgettably eye-catching manner. The rugged lines from the massive, colorful wood beams provide a perfect contrast with the hard, gray concrete walls. The end result is a home that resembles an old-growth forest sprouting up beside a rocky cliff face. Cantilevered Bio Villa http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ridge-home.jpg While this design appears somewhat basic from the outside, it is actually a complex feat of bio engineering. The architects of Cloud 9 worked to make the building appear to be made from one single wall that twists and turns from the underground garage all the way to the concrete sloped roof. The softly titled ceiling allows the building to be open throughout the home, letting in ample natural light. It also provides easy access to the rooftop plants, so watering is as simple as walking outside. Pool Cooled House http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...e-interior.jpg The water in this gorgeous home is so stunning that it makes the design itself a work of art, but rather than just serving as a design gimmick, the architects at Wallflower opted to use the ponds as a simple way to cool the house as it sits under the hot Singapore sun. The ponds flow silently and beautifully throughout the home, acting as a heat sink keep the bedrooms and kitchen cool throughout the year. Sustainable Rainforest Retreat http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...me-retreat.jpg While this home looks incredibly contemporary, it was actually constructed with a concrete foundation and steel frame that were already in place, but long abandoned. The architects at SPG incorporated these factors into the design, along with the timber that was initially displaced for the building’s construction. To make the home even more eco-friendly, the house also has its own solar panels and a rainwater recycling system. Recycled Steel, Concrete and Wood Townhouse http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...renovation.jpg Like the Costa Rican retreat, this townhome reused part of the foundation from the building site to create a modernist, sustainable home. The architects at Studio A77 used discarded guard rails, highway dividers, bridge supports and recycled doors to remodel and rebuild this stunning townhouse. The new design is industrial, but eco-friendly and wonderfully open, offering ample natural light. Wood Pallet Cargo Container Homes http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...llet-home1.jpg Designers everywhere have been turning to recycled shipping containers to create inexpensive and sustainable homes and offices. But the creative minds at Infiniski decided to take the trend a step further by incorporating recycled wood pallets into the mix. The pallets aren’t only aesthetically pleasing, they are also a good way to add shade to the designs while still letting in light and ventilation. Minimalist Desert Retreat http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...se-design1.jpg Designing a naturally climate-controlled home in the middle of the desert is no easy task, but its not beyond the skills of architect Lloyd Russell. He opted to use a rusted metal canopy to shade the house and patio, while still allowing wind to roll over the roof in order to let the home to cool naturally. The rusty coloring is a perfect compliment to the desert setting, allowing the building to flow seamlessly with its natural environment. Want More? Incredible Underwater Landscapes Made with Swirling Ink
معماری Incredible Underwater Landscapes Made with Swirling Ink http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...lori-ink-1.jpg Ribbons of color swirl and unfurl in stunning, kinetic formations that call to mind coral and other flora and fauna on the ocean floor. The Self-Assembly Line: Viral Architecture Units
معماری The Self-Assembly Line: Viral Architecture Units http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...assembly-1.jpg This is architectural biomimicry on a whole new level: taking inspiration not from large organisms like trees or animals, but from the molecular structure of a virus module. Designed and installed at the 2012 TED Conference by Skylar Tibbits and Arthur Olson, The Self-Assembly Line consists of a set of these modules inside a larger structure that forces them together through stochastic rotation. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...assembly-2.jpg Together, the geometry of each unit as well as magnets affixed to strategic places ensure that the units fit together into a viral structure. Over time, as the units continue to come together, they form furniture-scale configurations. The design is a small-scale version of the architects’ vision for self-assembling large-scale structures. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...assembly-3.jpg “Self-Assembly as a method of construction relies on discrete and programmable components, simple construction/design sequences, energy input and structural redundancy – fundamental elements that are demonstrated in the installation,” say the architects at ArchDaily. “This installation demonstrates the intersection of macro and micro worlds as well as translation from molecular and synthetic phenomena to large-scale physical implementation. We aim to fuse the worlds of design, computation and biology through a process of scaling up.” http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...assembly-4.jpg “While implementing the known structure of molecular systems, this installation also proposes the implementation of design/engineering to natural phenomena as a hybrid system. Part scientific research, part design speculation – we are neither restricted to the exact specifications of the biological realm, nor the limitlessness of the design world.” Want More? If Wright’s Falling Water Were a Tree House …
معماری If Wright’s Falling Water Were a Tree House … http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...esidence-1.jpg Fallingwater, the legendary architectural masterpiece of Frank Lloyd Wright, famously includes elements of its natural surroundings. Specifically, the house integrates the waterfall on top of which it was built. Like Fallingwater, this stunning home in Portland, Oregon celebrates the natural setting in which it exists. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...esidence-2.jpg (all images via: Robert Harvey Oshatz) Architect Robert Harvey Oshatz conceived of the design when his client declared that he wanted a house which would not only be in harmony with its environment, but also be a physical representation of music. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...esidence-4.jpg The home’s lot includes a very steep slope, which allows the main floor to sit on the level of the tree canopy. Surrounding trees lovingly brush their leaves up against the gentle curves of the home’s levels. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...esidence-3.jpg Echoing the compelling natural flow of Fallingwater, the Portland house features vast uninterrupted walls of glass and organic shapes throughout. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...esidence-7.jpg Walls, floors and ceilings are made of natural wood, reinforcing yet again the feeling of being in a highly sophisticated tree house. Generous use of natural stone and curved shapes add fascinating nature-like elements to the impressive interior. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...esidence-5.jpg Overall, the home took seven years to go from concept to completion. The care and thought that the architect obviously put into the realization of the client’s wishes is evident in every facet of this truly poetic home. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...esidence-6.jpg Although the photographs are beyond impressive, according to the architect they do the property no justice. To really enjoy this unusual home, he says, one has to walk through it and take in every feature first-hand. Want More? Flame Fame: 12 Red Hot Designer Fire Stations
معماری Flame Fame: 12 Red Hot Designer Fire Stations http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tions_main.jpg When it comes to fire stations, simplicity and usability are foremost but that doesn’t mean form has to take a back seat to function. These 12 hot designer fire stations are hook & ladder leaders in more ways than one, combining WYSIWYG practicality with livability, economy and style. Brandweer, Weert, The Netherlands http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_1a.jpg(images via: Revolutioner and Contemporist) By day or by night, the Weert Fire Station designed by BDG Architects displays a cool modernist vibe tempered by the use of cast steel earthtone panels on its exterior walls. The stylized “fire” patterns embossed into the panels age naturally under the influence of the weather but their rusty hues manage to evoke the image of smoldering embers. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_1b.jpg(images via: Revolutioner and Contemporist) Inside, carefully considered space management and a conscious effort to introduce exterior light results in a comfortable, livable area that minimizes the need for energy-intensive artificial lighting. Translucent doors on the fire engine bays invite outside observers to view the station’s workings while contributing to the refreshingly light atmosphere within and throughout the structure. Fire Stations Leipzig, Germany http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_2a.jpg(images via: Tagebau) When Tagebau Architekten + Designer were invited to submit their design for a trio of identical feuerwehr (fire stations) in Leipzig, Germany, they focused on keeping costs down through economies of scale. The result was the sleek, modern structure above that resembles a cross section of an airfoil. An extension of the outer walls on one end of the building creates a sheltered outdoor space where station staff can congregate and interact. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_2b.jpg(images via: Tagebau) Another important consideration was the need for the projected stations to be environmentally friendly. By integrating the 4 engine bays smoothly into the building’s structure, thermal transmission through the exterior skin is minimized without affecting the firefighters’ need to access the engines quickly and conveniently. “Ave Fenix” Fire Station, Mexico City http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_3a.jpg(images via: AP Architecture-Page) The Ave Fenix Fire Station by BGP Arquitectura was designed as a high boxlike shape that “almost disappears after the facade.” The use of complementary colors and materials combined with a plethora of slit-like windows that soften the structure’s shape at night help the station blend in with the surrounding urban scene. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_3b.jpg(images via: AP Architecture-Page) Inside, the designers have taken full advantage of the “big box” plan so as to create a sense of brightness and openness, cancelling out any claustrophobic impressions that the lack of large windows may possibly engender. Vitra Fire Station, Weil am Rhein, Germany http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_4c.jpg(images via: Cheetah_flicks, Dom Dada, Modern Architecture Center and Wojtek Gurak) Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid kicked off her stellar career in a big way with the Vitra Fire Station in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Four years in the making, the station was competed 10 years before Hadid was awarded the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_4b.jpg(image via: Wojtek Gurak) The Vitra Fire Station gives the appearance of a bird in flight from afar. Closer in, one can see the structure of the building formed from a series of sharply angled flat planes that come together to create a stunning three-dimensional interior space. Ironically, the impetus for this stunning station was a 1981 fire that caused extensive damage to the Vitra design campus in Weil am Rhein. The Vitra Fire Station’s true purpose is to preclude the possibility of such a destructive fire occurring in the future. Fire Station in Porto Santo, Madeira, Portugal http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_5a.jpg(images via: Arch Daily) Luís Banazol’s entry in a design competition for a proposed fire station in Porto Santo, Madeira, Portugal emphasizes ease of construction taking into account a site with irregular geometry situated on a small slope. Though steel and concrete are the materials of choice, Banazol’s design appears light, airy and open while retaining ease of access and superior functionality. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_5b.jpg(image via: Arch Daily) The proposed fire station is actually larger than it appears, consisting of a two-story above ground building with large open areas and an integral basement. The size of the building’s component features was dictated by specifications suggested by Portugal’s National Fire Service, challenging Banazol to create a distinctive design within very narrow parameters – a challenge which he seems to have met admirably. Porte Pouchet Fire Station + Municipal Motor Transport, Paris, France http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_6a.jpg(images via: FF3300 and Arch Daily) French architects Jean-Marc Ibos and Myrto Vitart have a soft spot for firefighters – how else to explain the Porte Pouchet Fire Station + Municipal Motor Transport in Paris, France? The post-modernist multi-level structure includes a restaurant and a glass-fenced terrace with a running track while just outside, a regulation-sized soccer field offers a grassy expanse for practicing The Beautiful Game. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_6b.jpg(image via: Arch Daily) It’s not ALL fun & games for the firefighters at Porte Pouchet, however. Interior space includes bedrooms for up to 50 firemen, workshops and administrative offices. One singular design feature stands out: the terrace ceiling is made up of a mirror-polished sheet of stainless steel perforated by acoustic insulation. The design acts to trap noise from the road outside and prevent it from reflecting into the building below. Fire Station 18, Oakland, California http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_7a.jpg(images via: Architecture-View and Inhabitat) The Oakland Fire Department’s Fire Station 18 may look red thanks to its brick walls but it’s actually green, inside and out. Designed by Shah Kawasaki Architects to be an environmentally sound and toxin-free replacement for a demolished traditional fire station, Fire Station 18 was built with sustainable materials and features x natural ventilation system and a radiant-heated floor. These efforts paid off when the completed station was awarded LEED Gold status. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_7b.jpg(image via: Inhabitat) Fire Station was not only designed to be green, it’s environmentally friendly in its daily functions as well. features include a solar hot water heater, a highly efficient HVAC system, denim insulation and cool roofing materials. Community involvement was arranged by contracting out the building’s outside wall decor to a public art project. Fire Station, Radebeul, Germany http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_8a.jpg(images via: Tagebau) Tagebau Architekten + Designer’s proposal for a fire station in Radebeul, a suburb of Dresden, Germany, was designed on a clean slate. It looks like it’s made from clean slate as well: slab sides and an ultra-clean profile speaks of no-frills, bare bones modern aesthetics. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_8b.jpg(images via: Tagebau) It may be unadorned but Tagenau’s fire station is anything but inefficient. The structure assumes the form of an open-ended courtyard to facilitate community use, while the engine exits are positioned so that the bulk of the building blocks sound from reaching a nearby housing development. Monaghan Fire Station, Monaghan, Ireland http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_9a.jpg(images via: Architecture News Plus) Designed by Van Dijk International, the Monaghan Fire Station features a noticeably tilted front façade “expressing the readiness of the fire brigade to respond quickly and efficiently to an emergency.” Yellow accents on the main windows and red framed engine bay doors contrast with the building’s deep gray brick and cladding while evoking the colors traditionally associated with firefighting. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_9b.jpg(images via: Geograph and Furniture Fair) The station’s design incorporates 6 dedicated vehicle bays, a drill tower for training, a CCTV system, workshop areas and a canopy area for smokers. Yes, smokers… well, it’s not as if they’re going to start a fire or anything. Clovis Fire Station No.5, Clovis, California http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ations_11a.jpg(images via: Masonry Systems and Jazzportraits) Completed in 2007, Clovis Fire Station No.5 was designed by Don Dommer Associates and is a triumph of sustainable design. Its construction involved the extensive use of recycled and low-pollutant materials while natural lighting was maximized through the use of clerestory lighting, shaded windows and a skylight over the front entry. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ations_11b.jpg(images via: Arc Hop) The 10,500 square foot station houses a crew of 6 and features a conference room, kitchen & dining area, a day room, fitness facilities and an 80-ft. apparatus bay. An open truss roof system supports a gently arching steel roof sheltering the three-bay engine and service garage. Fire and Rescue Services Building, Libourne, France http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ations_12a.jpg(images via: ArcelorMittal) Designed by Atelier des Architectes Mazières and Agence Ragueneau et Roux and completed in 2009, the Fire and Rescue Services Building in Libourne, France, is made up of two complementary structures: a silver-colored technical structure housing the firefighters’ living quarters and equipment and a mainly red administration block containing offices and training facilities. A simple, monolithic fire tower gives the station its identity as well as serving for training purposes. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ations_12b.jpg(image via: ArcelorMittal) As the facility was conceived as being environmentally friendly both during and after construction, heavy use was made of 100% recyclable Aluzinc which is steel clad with a weather-resistant aluminum-zinc alloy. The Aluzinc panels making up the exterior walls are stamped with a wave pattern, meant to symbolize the importance of water to firefighters and firefighting. Bergen Brannstasjon, Bergen, Norway http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ations_10a.jpg(images via: ArchitectureLover and Urbika) The sweeping layout of the Bergen Brannstasjon (fire station) curves inwardly against a small lake highlighted by a flying bridge and an asymmetrically placed drill tower. The design, by Oslo-based architects Stein Halvorsen Sivilarkitekter, strives for sustainability while adding one more appealing public component to Bergen’s vibrant lakefront area. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ations_10b.jpg(image via: Top Box Design) What’s a fire station without a fire pole? The Bergen Brannstasjon’s fire pole has also undergone the designer treatment. Retaining its uncompromising functionality, the pole is surrounded by varying textured materials and open views to the outside that act to bring light into the building during the day. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...hiteblock2.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tations_EP.jpg(image via: StrangeCosmos.com) “In case of emergency, break glass”… this unorthodox fire station located somewhere in Eastern Europe goes one further by putting a fireman (a dummy, we presume) in a glass bubble protruding out from the station’s upper level. It seems a bit too far away for someone at street level to break the glass – perhaps that’s the intention. Want More? Housing for the Homeless: 14 Smart & Sensitive Solutions
معماری Housing for the Homeless: 14 Smart & Sensitive Solutions http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...using-main.jpg City officials spend a lot of time and energy worrying about how to keep homeless people off public furniture and out of certain common areas, when they should be considering how to better manage the issue of homelessness in general. One area of focus is homeless housing, whether simply meeting the immediate needs of people who live on the streets or providing a more long-term, forward-thinking transitional living spaces. These 14 designs for homeless housing provoke thought as to how we can meet the needs of disadvantaged people living in our own communities, and ensure that the situation is only temporary. Hopetel: Transitional High-Rise Housing http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ng-hopetel.jpg (images via: evolo.us) Homelessness is on the rise, and millions of people across the world do not have a safe, dry place to sleep at night, let alone to perform basic tasks of personal hygiene or prepare themselves for potential employment. The ‘Hopetel’ proposes a transient solution for the waves of newly homeless people who have lost their homes due to foreclosure, providing a stable environment while they attempt to get back on their feet. The skyscraper includes compact dwelling units as well as shared amenities like laundry, storage, showers and kitchen facilities. It’s organized in a way that promotes social interaction between its residents, allowing these people to see that they are not alone. Mobile Homeless Shelter by Paul Elkin http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...aul-elkins.jpg (images via: paul elkin) Portable and water-tight, this concept for homeless housing by Paul Elkin could meet the demands of a certain segment of the homeless population that prefers to remain transient. Resembling an extremely compact version of an RV, this low-impact structure contains fold-away furniture, a mattress, a toilet, and even a kitchen. Theoretically it could be built at a very low cost, eliminating the need to sleep out in the open. WheelLY Recycled Homeless Shelter by Zo-Loft Architecture & Design http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ng-wheelly.jpg (images via: zo-loft) Portable and temporary, this unusual-looking design by Italian firm Zo-Loft provides a safe storage space for one’s belongings during the day, and expands into a tent at night. The ‘WheelLY’ is made of a rolling aluminum frame fitted with two polyester tents made of recyclable or recycled materials. The rolling design enables it to hold up to 250 pounds of personal items, and the push-handle also functions as a brake. Back on Track by Sarah Crowley http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...lmost-home.jpg (images via: tesseract) Winner of a competition by Tesseract Collective, ‘Back on Track’ is a comprehensive proposal for homeless rehabilitation that involves not just housing but also community and improving long-term prospects. Going beyond just the requirements for immediate survival, ‘Back on Track’ is designed to be located along a strip of railway in designer Sarah Crowley’s town of Melbourne, Australia. Appropriating an under-used urban space that can be integrated into the surrounding city, the design includes a series of public programs that provide jobs and activities for the ‘formerly homeless’ that would live there. Tin Man No.11 by Kacey Wong http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ng-tin-man.jpg (images via: dezeen) Fanciful, but definitely fun, the Tin Man No.11 design by Kacey Wong takes a less serious look at how portable, wheeled trolleys could provide a safe and relatively comfortable home base for people who live on the streets. “It will not only serve as a shelter for the homeless but also decorate the city street, in a way,” says Wong of the robot-shaped design. The trolley opens to reveal a bed, desk and chair. Wong came up with the design after doing a field study on homeless people in Hong Kong, finding that many people do have jobs, but due to the high cost of living in the city, are forced to live on the streets near their place of employment. Cardborigami: Folding Portable Homeless Shelter http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...rdborigami.jpg (images via: inhabitat) This portable emergency shelter was designed based on the principles of origami. Architect Tina Hovsepian created the Cardborigami shelter from recycled cardboard; it starts out as a flat package and expands into a sort of paper tent. The material was chosen because it is inexpensive, lightweight, sustainable and naturally insulated. Hovsepian plans to refine the design to make it waterproof, fire-retardant and more comfortable. Sleepbox by Arch Group http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...g-sleepbox.jpg (images via: dezeen) The Sleepbox was actually designed with the intention of providing a compact space to take a nap, in environments like airports, but the design could easily be adapted for homeless housing as well. Russian architects Arch Group envision the Sleepbox as a unit that could be rented for a period of time between fifteen minutes and a few hours, with bedding that would be automatically changed between users; it would be particularly useful for layovers that would normally result in travelers snoozing in uncomfortable chairs. Imagine if these units could be placed in cities, perhaps sponsored by the local community, for people who don’t have roofs over their heads. Home Dome, Made of Packing Peanuts http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-home-dome.jpg (images via: green building elements) Designed by a 12-year-old boy, the Home Dome makes use of a waste material that happens to provide a lot of insulation from the weather. For his entry in the Design Squad Trash to Treasure competition, Max Wallack won $10,000 and a Dell laptop computer for the structure, which is made of discarded plastic bags filled with styrofoam packing peanuts. Shelter Cart by Zo-Loft Architecture & Design http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...heltercart.jpg (images via: treehugger) Many homeless people gather discarded materials that have value, like aluminum cans, in bags or shopping carts in order to make a little bit of money. Designers Barry Sheehan and Gregor Timlin re-imagined the potential uses of that cart, creating a large, highly visible yellow push-cart that also functions as a shelter. The Shelter Cart – a submission in the 2006 DesignBoom social awareness competition – is not intended as a definitive answer to homelessness, but rather a way to raise awareness about the issue. Pump and Jump http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...p-and-jump.jpg (images via: design boom) Another idea that considers the need for many homeless people to push their personal items or gathered valuables around in a cart is the Pump and Jump. Designers Jeong-Yun Heo, Seong-Ho Kim and Chung Lee explain, “It’s a cart for a homeless who collect recycled things. We are have two concepts for the cart. First is pumping Air, second is fixing the box on the cart. A Homeless can rest in the shelter and store collections such as bottles, sheets of paper, cardboards, etc.” Instant Housing by Urban Nomads http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ban-nomads.jpg (images via: design buzz) Tiny mobile homes that can easily be carried around by a single person, these Instant Housing Shelters by Urban Nomads consist of a metal container with a pop-out tent-like structure, fitted with wheels. The housing unit contains a retractable padded bed, a first aid kit, mirror, whistle, multi-tool, flashlight and a plastic hood with a viewing window. Affordable and easily transportable, the units could also be used for emergency housing in the event of a disaster, or recreational camping. Homeless Health Care Clinic Made of Shipping Containers http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ner-clinic.jpg (images via: inhabitat) Homeless people need much more than shelters and even community support – they need health care, too. This concept by Co-Tain provides a simple health clinic made of shipping containers. Designed for the Paramore district of downtown Orlando, Florida, the Homeless Health Care Clinic is inexpensive to build, and sustainable. Shelter Home for the Homeless by Javier Larraz http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ier-larraz.jpg (images via: archdaily) The Shelter Home for the Homeless also considers more than just putting a roof over the heads of people who don’t have one of their own. It aims to improve their quality of life, with a community that emphasizes social interaction. The shared spaces in this sleek design include leisure rooms and spaces for occupational workshops. Mini Capsule Hotel by Atelier Van Lieshout http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...sule-hotel.jpg (images via: dezeen) Like the SleepBox, the Mini Capsule Hotel was not designed as a solution for homeless housing, but it could be adapted for such a use. Atelier Van Lieshout created the six-bed dorm-style hotel for an outdoor installation at Design Miami in 2009. Its original purpose, in fact, was almost on the other end of the spectrum: the designers describe it as “a send up of the corporate VIP lounge/oasis” functioning as a place to crash during or after a party. Brad Pitt reportedly bought it for his private beach. But such capsule hotels could have a much more practical use in urban environments. Want More? Manifest Destiny! Parasite Cabin Clings to San Francisco Wall
معماری Manifest Destiny! Parasite Cabin Clings to San Francisco Wall http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-destiny-1.jpg Jarringly out of place, a tiny, rustic cabin clings to the wall of an urban high-rise in the unlikely location of San Francisco, California. The cabin, which is fitted with a rocking chair and even a real, working wood stove, occupies one of the only remaining places in the heart of this cramped city to add a new structure. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-destiny-2.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-destiny-3.jpg Entitled ‘Manifest Destiny!’, the installation by artist Mark Reigelman is intentionally absurd and incongruous. Affixed like a parasite to the existing infrastructure, the cabin seems to hang rather precariously from the Hotel des Arts above the Restaurant Le Central. The installation will remain in place – allowed to change and weather as a real cabin would – until October 2012. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-destiny-4.jpg While the project seems to comment on the overpopulated nature of urban environments, the bigger message is about “the romantic spirit of Western myth” and the arrogance of westward expansion in the 19th century. San Francisco is not a welcoming new territory to be claimed, nor was the American west before pioneers began pushing their way into land that already belonged to other people. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-destiny-6.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-destiny-7.jpg “Manifest Destiny! is about intrepidly claiming and occupying space regardless of hazard, existing occupants, inconvenience, daunting odds, or common sense. Manifest Destiny! is single-minded in its objective: move west, claim territory, build a home. Manifest Destiny! is about sacrificing everything for the outside chance of a better future. Manifest Destiny! is resolute.” Want More? Right Hear, Right Now: 8 Terrific Techy Devices for the Deaf
معماری Right Hear, Right Now: 8 Terrific Techy Devices for the Deaf http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...r-the-deaf.jpg Technology to improve the lives of handicapped people has brought us all kinds of incredible objects. From bionic body parts to inventive gadgets for the blind, inventors have been hard at work leveling the playing field for all humans. These devices for the deaf and hard of hearing help hearing impaired people communicate with the hearing world and keep up with all of the most important things in life. Deafinite Style http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...id-concept.jpg Aimed at a youngish clientele, the Deafinite Style hearing aid provides a uniquely stylish way to augment hearing that was either damaged by loud noises or impaired from birth. The jewelry-style earpiece was designed by German firm DesignAffairs Studio and uses a wearer’s stretched earlobe piercings to hold the body of the hearing aid. Perhaps it would only appeal to a small segment of the hearing impaired population, but to those who resist hearing aids because of their ugly, utilitarian appearance this invention could be a perfect match. Tactile Sound Alerts http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ing-device.jpg Most of us in the hearing world take for granted the fact that we can hear a variety of events taking place around us. The Aria is an attractive bracelet with a hidden function: it lets the wearer know when certain aural events are going on. The bracelet has little plastic nubs on the inside that rub against the wearer’s wrist to alert him or her to a ringing phone, a baby monitor, a doorbell, emergency sirens, an alarm clock, or a smoke alarm. Associated lights indicate which sound has activated the bracelet, letting the wearer direct his or her attention to the appropriate place. Speak Easy Phone http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...g-impaired.jpg Before the proliferation of text messaging, many hearing impaired people had to rely on relay calls in order to communicate via phone. These calls can be uncomfortable for both parties since there is a third party listening in and translating between typed words and text. Designer Suhyun Kim took the relay operator out of the equation with her Visual Sound phone concept. The deaf user types her end of the conversation into the phone and the phone itself translates the text into speech. Those who already use text messaging or email to communicate wouldn’t get much use out of this invention, but older people who are not as comfortable with those options may find that this is an easier-to-grasp option. Theater Translator http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...on-glasses.jpg Have you ever thought about how hearing impaired people see movies in the theater? There are screenings with captions at many theaters, but they are often scheduled at inconvenient times. These captioning glasses, being developed by Sony, will let hearing impaired movie-goers see captions for movies while everyone else in the theater watches a caption-free showing. The text for the movie will be transmitted directly to the glasses, which will be available for rent at theaters soon. Seeing the Signs http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...03/gestics.jpg For those who use primarily sign language to communicate with the world, getting a message across to someone who does not know sign language can be a frustrating endeavor. The Gestics system, envisioned by designer Luise Pescheck, is a portable sign language translator that can be used anywhere to turn sign language into text. Bands worn on the wrists of the signer detect muscle movements and “read” the signs being formed. The words are transmitted to the user’s iPhone and displayed on a projected screen. The screen, of course, is not part of the current generation of iPhones, so this concept is still a long way from becoming reality…if it ever does. Watch Where You Touch http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ller-watch.jpg People who are not only deaf but blind as well have double the obstacles when it comes to communicating with the world. This timepiece concept is meant to help deaf/blind people keep in touch with reality by providing the current time via a series of raised dots on its surface. Small dots arranged in lines take the place of a clock’s hands, pushing up against a thin membrane in positions that indicate the time – just in the way that a traditional clock would. The Helen Keller Watch concept was designed by students Andrea Seitner and Katharina Unger. Hidden Translations http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...on-glasses.jpg While some hearing impaired people avoid hearing aids out of embarrassment, technology is making it easier and easier to disguise a hearing problem. The Babelfisk concept, designed by Mads Hindhede, is a pair of glasses equipped with internal electronics that turn spoken words into speech bubbles right in front of the wearer’s eyes. Twin projectors place the speech bubbles directly onto the glasses’ lenses. Conversations would be simple to follow and participate in thanks to real-time, inconspicuous captioning. It may be a little alarming to see someone’s eyes darting around while they read rapidly changing text, though. Show and Tell http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ting-glove.jpg Sign language interpreters are not exactly hard to find, but when there is not one around and a deaf person needs to communicate with hearing people via sign language, this awesome system would be priceless. The Texting Glove, invented by a group of Google developers, senses the signs being formed by the wearer’s hand and translates them into text through an Android phone. The promising technology might have all of those professional sign language interpreters fearing for their jobs in the near future. Want More? Paper Architecture: Intricate 3D Sculptures by Ingrid Siliakus
معماری Paper Architecture: Intricate 3D Sculptures by Ingrid Siliakus http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...itecture-1.jpg From flat sheets of paper, entire cities emerge, rich in unexpected details like balconies, tiny windows and even little people. Dutch artist Ingrid Siliakus uses an initial 90-degree fold to give her miniature cityscapes depth and dimension, with an end result that is reminiscent of pop-up books. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...itecture-2.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...itecture-3.jpg Under Siliakus’ skilled hand, paper ranging from thin sheets to hefty card stock assemble into complex staircases, arches and spires. She specializes in the works of master architects, including Gaudi’s iconic Sagrada Familia of Barcelona. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...itecture-4.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...itecture-6.jpg Before reaching a final product for each piece, the Amsterdam-based paper artist creates an astonishing 20-30 prototypes. She adds layer after layer of folded and cut paper to the design until she is satisfied with the look. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...itecture-7.jpg “Working with paper forces me to be humble, since this medium has a character of its own that asks for cooperation. It is a challenge to find this cooperation with each separate paper brand I work with. Working with paper the way I do, namely by means of cutting and folding creating paper sculptures, asks of me to work with meditative precision. Paper architecture does not bare haste, it is its enemy; one moment of loss of concentration, can lead to failure of a piece…” http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...itecture-8.jpg “…I experience an ultimate satisfaction at the critic moment when the paper, with a silenced sigh, surrenders and becomes a blade-sharp crease. Augmented Reality: Awesome 3D Hand-Held Architecture
معماری Augmented Reality: Awesome 3D Hand-Held Architecture http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ion-stamps.jpg In a weak world economy where everyone is trying to be conservative with cash, new architectural projects go unbuilt more often than not. That doesn’t stop architects from designing incredible structures, though – it only means that they have to come up with slightly more creative ways of sharing them with the world. The Dutch postal service and the Netherlands Institute of Architecture joined forces to bring amazing architecture to the world via augmented reality. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ode-stamps.jpg The cooperative project aimed to present the public with architecture that would never see the light of day in the real world but still deserved to be admired. Working with Dutch advertising agency Gummo, the Netherlands Institute of Architecture and Dutch postal service created a very unusual sheet of stamps. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ing-stamps.jpg Some of the stamps display pictures of unbuilt but visionary architecture. Others contain QR codes that actually bring the structures to life. Holding one of the QR code stamps up to a webcam while visiting the project website makes one of the revolutionary buildings come to life right in the palm of your hand. The project is a perfect example of how technology can help us overcome problems in new and unexpected ways. These wonderful buildings may not be able to find a budget in real life, but putting them into the hands – literally – of architecture enthusiasts gives them a chance to be seen and to provide inspiration. Incarnate: Skull Carved from Outdated Computer Books
معماری Incarnate: Skull Carved from Outdated Computer Books http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...lasserre-1.jpg Artist Maskull Lasserre specializes in transforming ordinary objects into amazingly intricate, often somewhat unsettling works of art. His most recent work, ‘Incarnate (Three Degrees of Certainty II), conjures a highly realistic anatomic model of a skull from a stack of outdated software manuals. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...lasserre-2.jpg Lasserre used drills and hand tools to carefully chisel out areas of the compressed pages, carving out the skull as if it had been hiding in the books all along. It’s an interesting metaphor for the uselessness of the books, which no longer have any real value. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...lasserre-3.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...lasserre-4.jpg The artist’s previous projects include ‘Secret Carpentry’, in which the skeleton of a snake was carved out of a wooden axe handle – each tiny vertebrae smooth and distinct – as well as ‘Oracle’, a wooden picture frame with a corner chiseled into a child’s bottom teeth. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...lasserre-5.jpg Another project, ‘Outliers’, involved reproducing animal tracks onto the rubber soles of shoes that were then worn to leave highly unlikely prints all over urban areas in the cities of Montreal, Ottawa, Boston and New York. Musical Coca-Cola Beatbox for the 2012 Olympics in London
معماری Musical Coca-Cola Beatbox for the 2012 Olympics in London http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-beatbox-1.jpg Bold and interactive, the Coca-Cola Beatbox by London architects Pernilla & Asif will beckon visitors inside to play music and gaze out at the London 2012 Olympic Park. The eye-catching red-and-white pavilion can actually be played like a musical instrument by interacting with sounds imbedded into the architecture itself. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-beatbox-2.jpg The design was inspired by Coca-Cola’s ‘Move the Beat’ campaign, which aims to interest teens in the Olympics through a combination of music and sports. Hip Potty Musts: 15 Concept Designer Toilet Brushes
معماری Hip Potty Musts: 15 Concept Designer Toilet Brushes http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...brush_main.jpg From the outhouse to the White House, the best toilet brushes never bristle when it comes to cleaning the latrine. Combining carefully engineered ergonomics and sometimes surprising style to produce spotless results where it counts the most, these 15 concept designer toilet brushes won’t drop the ball when you drop a deuce. Ballo “Dancing” Toilet Brush http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_1a.jpg(images via: Normann Copenhagen) The Ballo Toilet Brush was designed for Normann Copenhagen by Jozeph Forakis, an alumnus of Domus Academy in Milan and the Rhode Island School of Design. As the latter was where the members of Talking Heads first met, it’s really no surprise Ballo (which means “dancing” in Italian) merrily wobbles around the bathroom thanks to its atypically rounded base. Big suit not included. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_1b.jpg(image via: Spotted By) “Ballo is a different, amusing and happy toilet brush,” states Forakis, who’s undoubtedly the first to describe a toilet brush as being happy. Forakis goes on to describe Ballo as “a funny but functional product that creates pleasure and gives an experience in people’s daily lives.” Having a toilet brush & holder dance around the bathroom whilst one answers the call of nature would be a very special experience indeed. Skull Head Toilet Brush Set http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...letbrush_2.jpg(images via: Pirates N Plunder, Nerd Approved and Jezebel) You don’t have to be One-Eyed Willie to own the Skull Head Toilet Brush Set but no Goonie geek worth his doubloons would be caught without one. The set includes a “life sized skull” and the matching handle (topped with a voodoo-mini-skull) detaches so replacing a worn-out toilet brush is as easy as plundering an unarmed merchant frigate. Arrr, scrub those decks AND the toilet, ye scurvy dog! Pinocchio Toilet Brush http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_3a.jpg(images via: E-Goods/Rakuten) Pants on fire? Yes please! Pinocchio must’ve really told a whopper to get himself in this sort of fix. Designed with a red, blue or green hat for a base, the Pinocchio Toilet Brush “nose” just what to do when unsightly stains rear their ugly head… and that’s the truth. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_3b.jpg(image via: Daily Home Tips) Anthropomorphic products are appealing to some, off-putting to others and the Pinocchio Toilet Brush is definitely one of those love-it-or-hate-it items. “If there is such a cute restroom brush,” suggests the sales copy at the Japanese product page, “the cleaning seems to become fun.” Oh really? Methinks some noses may be growing at a certain ad agency. Clean as a Whistle Bathroom Brush http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...letbrush_4.jpg(images via: ModCloth and Trend de la Creme) The Clean as a Whistle Bathroom Brush adds a dash of pastoral charm to any bathroom. Modeled after a songbird sitting prettily on a tree branch, the design employs a second faux branch to act as a hanger for the handle thus suspending the toilet brush and keeping the brush head high & dry. Ideal for those social media addicts (and you know who you are) who can’t resist “tweeting” anywhere and anytime. FRAGILE Toilette Brush http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_5a.jpg(images via: Selectism and Yatzer) One doesn’t usually associate bathroom cleaning supplies with fine wine but Antonio Gardoni isn’t your usual designer. His FRAGILE Toilette Brush cleverly masks a functional toilet brush within a plastic shell modeled after an upside-down wine glass. Of course, should you overindulge on the bubbly and find yourself driving the porcelain bus, a wine glass is probably the LAST thing you want to see. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_5b.jpg(image via: Yatzer) FRAGILE is one of Gardoni’s “5 Collection”, designed to “transform an ordinary bathroom ‘visit’ into an unforgettable experience!” Fine, but what if you’re drinking to forget? Istanbul WC Brush Holder http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...letbrush_6.jpg(images via: Stylepark, Mat and Me and First Bathrooms) The Istanbul (not Constantinople) WC Brush Holder is one heavy hitter: 4.13kg or 9.1 pounds to be exact. Designed by London-based industrial designer Ross Lovegrove for the Turkish brand VITRA, the WC Brush Holder exhibits a smooth, rounded shape that works well with today’s organic inspired appliances. KaKaK Toilet Brush http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_7a.jpg(images via: An Ad a Day) There’s not much that can be said about the KaKaK Toilet Brush besides the fact it was designed in 2012 by Jordi Pla of Jordi Pla Studio S.L for Homewood International of Taiwan. Then again, one might say the design speaks for itself and any description would be redundant… not to mention repugnant. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_7b.jpg(images via: Behance) The KaKaK Toilet Brush comes in your choice of black, white, blue, pink and brown (of course). Made from molded polypropylene, the in-your-face design makes sure you make no mistake when fumbling for your toothbrush after not getting enough sleep the previous night. Mahogany Skittle Brush http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...letbrush_8.jpg(images via: HGTV) Nina Tolstrup of Studiomama exercises her creative muse by repurposing wood. The Skittle Brush is just one example. Named and designed after Skittles, the old European sport ancestral to bowling, this sleek and slender organically curved toilet brush allows you to strike and stains, sparing no messes. Alessi Merdolino Toilet Brush http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_9a.jpg(images via: 4M and Furnish.co) We’re not sure if it’s intentional or not but the Merdolino Toilet Brush from Alessi seems to be named after “merde”, the French word for poop. Designed by Stefano Giovannoni in 1993, Merdolino turns the humble toilet brush from a utilitarian object to a decorative accessory. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_9b.jpg(image via: DesignBoom) A subtle variation on Merdolino sees the budding branch replaced by a slender Saguaro. Now if only they could replace the brush head’s bristles with real cactus thorns. Mesquiteolino, anyone? Rock Star Toilet Brush Holder http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_10.jpg(image via: Pioneer Linens) Those “pot of gold” jokes you’ve been saving up? Let ‘em rip, ’cause the $525 Rock Star Toilet Brush Holder has entered the building! Designer Windisch Nameek plated an otherwise unremarkable toilet brush handle and cylindrical holder in 24-karat gold for the very commonsensical reason that pure gold won’t corrode, pit or tarnish. Which raises the question… if you can afford $525 for a freakin’ toilet brush, why not just gold-plate your toilet so you’ll never need to use one? Afro Collection Toilet Brushes http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tbrush_11a.jpg(images via: DesignBoom) Gumption Design is based in Thailand, and that’s as far as we’ll go lest Spike Lee sees these so-called Afro Brushes and fires off another errant tweet. According to GD’s sales copy, what we have here is “a brush with a 70s afro look, the handle of the brush is in the form of a cool ‘hippy’” See, only cool hippies need be offended. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tbrush_11b.jpg(image via: DesignBoom) If you can get past the, ahem, distinctive design of the handle, what you’ve got here is a fun & funky… no, that’s not right. OK, these day-glo plastic psychedelic toilet brushes add a little color… forget it, we give up, gonna quit while we’re a head. Doh! Kleinkindsichere WC-Bürste http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_12.jpg(images via: Tchibo) Also known as the Child-Proof Toilet Brush, the Kleinkindsichere WC-Bürste is an idea whose time has come – just like curious toddlers who can come into any room at any time and get into a heapin’ helpin’ of toilet brush-related trouble. Then there are the dogs who see “toilet brush” and think “big white bone!” German designer Peter Praktisch has a solution, one that will be very familiar to anyone who’s tried to remove a child-proof cap off a bottle of pills. Of course, if you have trouble with those than your bathroom will reflect it. WC7 Electric Toilet Brush http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tbrush_13a.jpg(images via: Design Spotter and Castiglione/Morelli Design) Does your toilet’s criminally encrusted condition call for a special kind of cleaning agent? Then call on WC7, the electric toilet brush whose orders are “shoot to clean.” Designed by Francesco Castiglione Morelli with Annamaria Carelli, this is one polishing potty pistol that will leave even the most evilly stained commode shaken AND stirred. Lock (the bathroom door) and load! http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tbrush_13b.jpg(images via: Castiglione/Morelli Design) The WC7 packs a pair of AA batteries in the brush’s handle. Once installed, take careful aim and pull the trigger… the spinning brush head will eradicate those stains faster than Don Corleone erases his competition. Now there’s an offer nobody can refuse. DIY Self-Disinfecting Toilet Brush http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etbrush_14.jpg(images via: MAKE Projects) Designer toilet brush? Why ask why when you can DIY! The clever lads at MAKE Projects combined a classic barbershop glass Barbasol container with a standard toilet brush to create this awesome self-disinfecting toilet brush & holder that ends up being much more than just the sum of its parts. Er, you might not want to store your combs in there once it’s been re-purposed and used, though. THE Toilet Brush http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tbrush_15c.jpg(images via: Gigazine) It takes a pair of big brass ones to dub your new toilet brush “Toilet Brush,” as if any and all other such devices are suddenly, hopelessly irrelevant, and Japanese housewares company Marna seems to have ‘em. Their new & improved product has been re-designed from handle to holder to be THE best toilet brush EVAR… and give Marna some credit for not calling it that. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tbrush_15b.jpg(images via: Gigazine) How does Marna know their brand new Toilet Brush will please their target market of finicky Japanese housewives? They asked them, of course: the company brought in 200 average housewives and asked them how the humble toilet brush could be improved. It was a smart move and besides, who’s gonna tell 200 housewives they’re wrong? http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...brush_15a1.jpg(image via: Gigazine) Suggestions ranged from incising grooves on the handle to help secure the grip, using both hard and soft bristles on the brush, and engineering a floating holder design that keeps the brush head high & dry between uses. Now if only they could re-design the toilet itself so toilet brushes aren’t necessary, suggested one Marna employee just before he was, er, canned. Want More? Surreal Art Spaces: 15 Stunning Gallery Transformations
معماری Surreal Art Spaces: 15 Stunning Gallery Transformations http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tions-main.jpg What better way to immerse yourself in an artist’s work than to walk into a space that has been altered in amazing and unexpected ways? Installation art transforms galleries and other spaces from blank canvases to full-scale, interactive and often surreal environments. These 15 installations range from pristine spaces obliterated by children armed with colorful stickers to complex matrices of metal hangers that jangle with the movement of forty finches. Suspended Bouncy Balls by Nike Savvas http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...uncy-balls.jpg (images via: this is colossal) Thousands of balls seemed to hover in midair for the eye-popping installation ‘Atomic: Full of Love, Full of Wonder’ by artist Nike Savvas at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in Melbourne. Not only did the installation create a disorienting field of color, but air movement from a fan caused the balls to gently bounce and sway. From Here to Ear by Celeste Boursier-Mougenot http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ns-finches.jpg (images via: lost at e minor) Hundreds of interconnected metal hangers provided an unusual perch for 40 finches in an installation called From Here to Ear (v.13) by artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art in 2011. The installation was one of sound as well as visuals, as the movements of the birds caused the hangers to clink together. Analog Interactive Installation by Karina Smigla-Bobinski http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nteractive.jpg (images via: this is colossal) A giant helium-filled bubble covered in dozens of charcoal nubs was bounced and flung around a white gallery space to create abstract markings on the walls and ceiling in ‘ADA – Analog Interactive Installation’, a sculpture by artist Karina Smigla-Bobinski. Eventually, after the participation of hundreds of visitors, the sculpture deflated and the walls were left nearly solid black. Thousands of Flowers in a Mental Health Center http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...tal-health.jpg (images via: this is colossal) A deteriorating mental health center in Massachusetts was a worn and rather sad place after 90 years of service to the local community. As the building was set to be demolished, artist Anna Schuleit set out to memorialize the building with “a respectful infusion of hope”. The resulting installation, called Bloom, filled the center with nearly 28,000 potted flowers. The public was invited for a four-day viewing. Read an interview with the artist at This is Colossal. Bouncing Tennis Balls by Ana Soler http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nnis-balls.jpg (images via: collabcubed) At first, these images appear to be multiple exposure photographs in which the motion of a ball has been captured in its arcs across gallery surfaces. But it’s actual an installation, with hundreds of tennis balls hanging from strings to effectively capture a sense of movement. The work, by Spanish artist Ana Soler, was displayed at the Mustang Art Gallery in Alicante, Spain. Cause & Effect by Do Ho Suh http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...and-effect.jpg (images via: the stranger) Amazingly precise spirals in varying shades of orange and red create a fiery-looking vortex at Western Washington University. Look closer and you’ll see that the installation, by Korean artist Do Ho Suh, is actual made up of thousands of tiny men. Says the artist, “The work is an attempt to decipher the boundaries between a single identity and a larger group, and how the two conditions coexist.” Massimal by Design Office Takebayashi Scroggin http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...s-massimal.jpg (images via: design boom) The ghost of some kind of massive animal lurks in a warehouse in this installation by New York Design Office Takebayashi Scroggin, created for the 2011 Beau Arts Festival. Entitled “massimal”, which the firm describes as “design objects that serve as prototypes to examine how physical form can engage the public realm,” the work is made of 20,000 white zip ties. Suspended Dandelions by Regine Ramseier http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...dandelions.jpg (images via: lustik) Two thousand dandelions were painstakingly plucked, sprayed with adhesive and loaded into a custom-made wooden transporter so they could be brought to a gallery and hung from the ceiling in a surreal installation by Regine Ramseier. The work was created as part of ArToll Summer Lab 2011. Field of Steel by Zadok Ben David http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...d-of-steel.jpg (images via: collabcubed) An artificial meadow covers the floor of Artclub 1563 in Seoul, South Korea in this art installation by Zadok Ben David. The work, entitled ‘Blackfield’, changes as you walk from one side of the room to the other. 12,000 botanical specimens modeled on textbook illustrations were cut from steel and imbedded in a layer of sand. All black on one side, the tiny plants are revealed in full color from the alternative perspective. Melting Woman by A.F. Vandervorst http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ting-woman.jpg (images via: af vandervorst) A woman melted before viewers’ eyes at the Arnhem Mode Biennale in 2011. The installation, by artist A.F. Vandervorst, was comprised of a wax sculpture imbedded with wicks that slowly eroded the woman’s body, drastically altering the shape of the work within hours. The Obliteration Room by Yayoi Kusama http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...teration-1.jpg (images via: queensland gallery of modern art) A pristine room, with every surface painted a stark shade of white, was completely covered in a chaotic jumble of colored stickers for Yayoi Kusama’s installation, The Obliteration Room. Constructed at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, the installation gave the room over to thousands of sticker-armed children over a period of two weeks. By the end of the installation, the white surfaces were barely visible. Post-It Structures by Yo Shimada http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...s-post-its.jpg (images via: design boom) Entire architectural structures were built from nothing more than 30,000 brightly colored post-it notes in an installation called ‘Post-It Structures’ by Yo Shimada of Tato Architects. Installed at the Artzone Gallery in Kyoto, Japan, the structures were created by sticking the notes to each other so that they created cell-like shapes. Forever Bicycles by Ai Weiwei http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...les-weiwei.jpg (images via: inhabitat) 1,200 bicycles were welded together into a gigantic, glittering cavern by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. ‘Forever Bicycles’ was located at the center of the show ‘Absent’ at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the title of the exhibit referring to the dissident artist’s political detention. Plexus 5 by Gabriel Dawe http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...xus-5-dawe.jpg (images via: gabriel dawe) It looks like an optical illusion – a rainbow created by light and water, perhaps. But Plexus 5 is actually an installation of colored strings, attached to the walls and floor of the Pump Project Art Complex in Austin, Texas. Artist Gabriel Dawe is known for his often-complex string art installations. Field Guide Butterflies by Eiji Watanabe http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...s-watanabe.jpg (images via: this is colossal) Thousands of butterflies were freed from the pages of field guides and ‘let loose’ on gallery surfaces in ‘A Butterfly’s Eye View’ by artist Eiji Watanabe. The insects were carefully cut from the books and pinned to the walls and ceilings, with the cast-off books left, like cocoons, on tables within each room. Want More? Squint to See: Almost-Abstract Aerial Photography Series
معماری Squint to See: Almost-Abstract Aerial Photography Series http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ighborhood.jpg Have you ever looked out of an airplane window and been completely mesmerized by the world below? From way up there in the sky, the world looks completely different and wonderfully abstract. Objects take on a kind of magical quality when viewed from this unusual perspective…and that’s exactly what drove photographer Alex MacLean to get a pilot’s license and take to the sky. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ular-docks.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ea-of-cars.jpg (all images via: My Modern Met) While taking a community planning course in the midst of his architecture degree program, Alex MacLean was introduced to aerial photography. This introduction would turn out to be a fateful one.http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten.../airplanes.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...2/04/beach.jpg After graduation, MacLean earned his pilot’s license and began flying on his own. From his unique vantage point, he began to see patterns emerging in the most mundane places. He started shooting pictures of those patterns through his airplane’s window. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...d-of-trees.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ng-circles.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...h-swimmers.jpg From tidy rows of airplanes to claustrophobic mish-mashes of old cars, MacLean’s lens captures some of the most unforgettable aerial photography ever. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...small-dock.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-tank-cars.jpg The items in the photos are removed from their ordinary contexts and framed in an entirely new way, giving them previously-unexplored qualities and making them seem extraordinary. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten.../rv-forest.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-peninsula.jpg Some of the scenes inspire curiosity – others are simply baffling. Why so many RVs in one place? How are the tightly-packed cars going to move? Do the people at the beach realize they are being watched? http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...owded-boat.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ndoned-lot.jpg Like a flying Google Street View camera, MacLean’s lens captures the everyday-turned-extraordinary. When you step back from the daily shuffle, things seem more orderly, even more meaningful. There are unexpected patterns and order in everything. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...le-of-cars.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...skate-park.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...2/04/taxis.jpg In a way, these photographs are humbling reminders of just how much happens in the world that is outside of our personal bubbles. Sometimes it is neat and tidy, other times it is chaotic and puzzling. But there is so much out there to see. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nter-trees.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...arking-lot.jpg Taking this line of thinking one step further, perhaps everything in life looks different from further away. Maybe we can count these pattern-filled portraits as a lesson in stepping back to gain a new perspective. Want More? Walky Talky: 12 Concept Mobile Phone Telephone Booths
معماری Walky Talky: 12 Concept Mobile Phone Telephone Booths http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...booth_main.jpg Classic static telephone booths are slowly fading from the urban landscape but talking on the phone has never been more popular. These 12 concept mobile phone telephone booths attempt to recapture the personal isolation those old public phones provided while enhancing the experience of conversing in the city. Portable Cellular Phone Booth http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nebooth_4a.jpg(image via: Nick Rodrigues) No discussion of portable cellular phone booths would be complete without the Portable Cellular Phone Booth, a one-off “sculpture” crafted from stainless steel, aluminum and polycarbonate. Though it dates from 2002, Rodrigues’ art object perfectly captures that pivotal moment in societal history when mobile phones began to nose landlines out of the picture. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nebooth_4b.jpg(images via: Gawker and Nick Rodrigues) Measuring 16″ X 24″ X 36″, the device collapses down to flat-pack dimensions and can be worn on the user’s back much like a backpack or rucksack, only harder and heavier. When a call comes in, simply unfold and insert one’s head – and try to ignore the amused, bemused and confused stares of onlookers. Silence Chair http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nebooth_2a.jpg(images via: SilenceChair.com and Sensory Impact) The Silence Chair from Finnish designer Antti Evävaara offers mobile phone users a comfortable personal space within which to chat. At the same time, the chair’s safety glass side panels ensure the sound of the conversation doesn’t intrude upon others. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nebooth_2b.jpg(image via: Masty Wizdom) Available in up to 67 different colors spread across a range of 6 different styles, the Silence Chair is designed for use in airports, lobbies, lounges, meeting rooms and libraries – the latter is the scene of the image above. Note the sticker on the side glass indicating the suggested use as a cell phone communication station. Hush Cone http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...onebooth_3.jpg(image via: Design Buzz) The Hush Cone, designed by Miles Thornley of Brown Kiwi, re-imagines the classic outdoor public phone booth for 21st century modes of mobile communication. While dispensing with the pricey wiring and the landline phone of old, the organically shaped fiberglass booth maintains the sense of visual and acoustic privacy that mobile phone users often find missing in urban environs. The Cell Atlantic CellBooth http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nebooth_6b.jpg(images via: JennyLC) The Cell Atlantic CellBooth (the name is a throwback to the good old days of Bell Labs) from artist Jenny L Chowdhury takes Nick Rodrigues’ personal phone booth concept and lightens it up a little. Like Rodrigues’ blocky booth, the Cell Atlantic CellBooth is worn knocked-down on one’s back but easily unfolds when a call needs to be made or taken. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nebooth_6a.jpg(images via: JennyLC) The insta-booth employs so-called “Third World Samsonite”, that plaid, stiff & shiny pseudo-fabric usually seen lining wheeled pushcarts sold from dollar stores. The fabric is light, tough and resists water in case the user’s caught outdoors in stormy weather. The Veasyble http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...onebooth_5.jpg(images via: 2Modern) Phone booth meets fashion? The Veasyble (with the emphasis on the “easy”) designed by Gloria Pizzilli, Arianna Petrakis, Ilaria Pacini and Adele Bacci appears to be an attempt to make the accordion cool again, assuming the accordion was ever cool that is. Combine it with Pac-Man and you’ve got a polyethylene, paper and fabric isolation chamber than can be shared by two in a pinch… ouch! Prooff PhoneBox http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nebooth_1a.jpg(images via: Mathieu Gabiot and Contemporan) You can knock down the traditional wall of telephone booths lining the walls of busy train stations, airports and the like but travelers still need a place to make their mobile phone calls. Enter Mathieu Gabiot’s Prooff PhoneBox, a truncated version of the old-style full length booth that serves basically the same purpose: providing a sound-sheltered environment where one can hear and be heard. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nebooth_1b.jpg(image via: Apres Furniture) Described by its makers as an “Acoustic Mobile Phone Booth”, the Prooff PhoneBox can be mounted singly or in ranks depending on the site and situation. It economical design focuses on the small space around the caller’s head: that’s where the speaking and listening goes on, after all. Pentaphone Isolation Space http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...onebooth_7.jpg(images via: DesignBoom) Austrian designer Robert Stadler conceived the Pentaphone as a vertically adjustable isolation space that doubles as an intriguing piece of indoor furniture. Crafted from stained and varnished wood panels lined with acoustically absorbent foam, the Pentaphone may look more than a little sci-fi but why not? It’s hard to get any quieter than being in outer space. Corniche des Chapeaux http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nebooth_8a.jpg(images via: Benedetto Bufalino and Textualy.org) Is it a stretch to call Corniche des Chapeaux a mobile phone booth? Perhaps, but let’s just keep it under our oversized hats, shall we? This collaboration between artist/designers Benedetto Bufalino and Victor Vieillard saw a series of colorful hats line the waterfront of Marseille, France, in June of 2007. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nebooth_8b.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nebooth_8c.jpg(images via: Benedetto Bufalino and Ma-Buse) Besides serving as cozy, convenient spaces for mobile phone communication, the hats functioned as sunshades during the day and reading spaces by night thanks to integrated lighting. The Mobile Phone Booth http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...onebooth_9.jpg(images via: Design Quarters News) Designer Alain Gilles has come up with the Mobile Phone Booth, a wall-mounted personal space similar in many ways to the Prooff PhoneBox. The Mobile Phone Booth is larger, however, and includes an integral inner shelf to rest one’s communication device of choice… or one’s arm. CellZone Cell Phone Booth http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ebooth_12b.jpg(images via: Softpedia) The CellZone “Bring Your Own Phone” Cell Phone Booth from Salemi Industries looks a lot like the traditional telephone booth it’s meant to replace. Coincidence? We think not – and neither does US Cellular, who’ve seen fit to install a few CellZones (renamed “Chatter Box”) at US Cellular Stadium… where else? http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ebooth_12a.jpg(images via: UMass and Softpedia) The cylindrical, transparent-doored booths look a little like those message capsules used in pneumatic tube delivery systems but not to fear: you won’t end up like a Futurama character should you step inside one. On the contrary, you’ll stay put but your mobile phone messages will do the traveling for you. PARCS Phone Booth http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nebooth_11.jpg(images via: Archiproducts) The PARCS Phone Booth is a mobile office partition designed by PearsonLloyd. Functioning as an acoustically and visually shielded private space within public areas, the PARCS Phone Booth creates a head-to-toe sonic cocoon that offers silence to both the user and those who work nearby. The Cone of Silence http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ebooth_10a.jpghttp://www.healthcare-informatics.com/blogs/gwen/its-time-get-smart-and-remove-cone-silence Designers of mobile phone booths have shown they’re long on creativity but short on practicality – a forgivable foible, as the concept of creating space for mobile conversations is mainly untested in the real world… or is it? The classic 1960s spy comedy Get Smart featured the Cone of Silence, an awkward and ineffective acrylic double-bubble affair meant to conceal top-secret conversations between Maxwell Smart and the Chief of CONTROL. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ebooth_10b.jpg(images via: Alistair ****burn, Tiki Lounge & Bar and TV Acres) The flawed device was also available in a portable version for two and the “Umbrella of Silence” for groups. An idea ahead of its time? Perhaps, and not the show’s only one… Agent 86′s preferred mode of mobile communication was his shoe. “Smart phone” indeed. Want More? Container Urbanism: Reclaimed Pop-Up Structures
معماری Container Urbanism: Reclaimed Pop-Up Structures http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...urbanism-1.jpg When urban populations outgrow the pace of new construction, and suitable homes and offices spaces are difficult to find, what are property hunters to do? Perhaps more of them will start coming up with novel temporary solutions like this: a temporary, movable office made from shipping containers by Daiken-Met Architects. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...urbanism-2.jpg The architecture firm had a difficult time finding leasable space in the city of Gifu, Japan. So they designed this three-story structure, which is made from seven 20-foot shipping containers connected using a steel frame system. The frame made it easier to stack the containers, and also provides balcony space, which can be hard to come by in urban areas. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...urbanism-3.jpg Daiken-Met architects told Inhabitat, “In the local city, we are facing various problems such as decreasing population, increasing vacant land, on the other hand it is difficult to make a rental contract for small buildings.” http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...urbanism-5.jpg As Pop Up City notes, Sugoroku Office doesn’t just represent a new form of eco-friendly architecture, it’s a new sort of urbanism altogether. The architects obtained a short-term rental contract for a small plot of land that stipulates removal and reconstruction every few years. Want More? Suspended Grass Figures Grow in Galleries
معماری Suspended Grass Figures Grow in Galleries http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ulptures-1.jpg The figures seem to float on air, hanging in unnatural positions, their limbs dangling. Made of a compacted growing medium, these sculptures by Mathilde Roussel are planted with grass seeds and allowed to transform over time, the grass sprouting and growing. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ulptures-2.jpg The French artist’s ‘Lifes of Grass’ series is pictured here at the Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art in Nashville, Tennessee. The sculptures are formed using a metal frame, soil and wheat grass. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ulptures-3.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...culpures-4.jpg The artist explains that she aims to show viewers, through the sculptures, that the food we eat and the way that it is grown and transported has an impact on us all. “The natural world, ingested as food becomes a component of human being. Through these anthropomorphic and organic sculptures made of soil and wheat grass seeds, I strive to show that food, it’s origin, it’s transport, has an impact on us beyond it’s taste.” http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...cuptures-5.jpg “The power inside it affects every organ of our body. Observing nature and being aware of what and how we eat makes us more sensitive to food cycles in the world – of abundance, of famine – and allows us to be physically, intellectually and spiritually connected to a global reality.” Want More? Material World: 8 Substances That will Shape the Future
معماری Material World: 8 Substances That will Shape the Future http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-materials.jpg Advancements in science and technology have opened up a whole new world of possibilities in material science. Our future world won’t be made up of the same materials we are used to seeing today – it will be full of fascinating new stuff that can do truly incredible things. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nna-system.jpg Cell phone towers are generally big and unsightly, but since we want to be perpetually connected they seem to be a necessity…for now. The Spray-On Antenna System from ChamTech can turn just about any surface into an antenna. In the coming decades, ugly cell phone towers could easily give way to nearly unnoticeable antennae that take the form of buildings, trees or billboard poles painted with this amazing spray. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-packaging.jpg Food packaging is meant to keep our foods fresh and sanitary, but it is a leading source of waste in the world’s landfills. What if our packaged foods came in edible wrappers, just like fruits and vegetables do? Wikicells are edible food packaging invented by a Harvard professor who wants to turn the packaging industry on its head. The concept involves a very thin biodegradable shell surrounding a more robust edible shell, inside of which would sit the food or beverage. The thin shell could be removed and composted, then the thicker shell could be eaten along with the food inside or composted as well – and just like that, plastic food packaging could become obsolete. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...neverwet-1.jpg If you find yourself constantly spilling food on your clothes or dropping your phone in the toilet, NeverWet is one of those futuristic products you’ll want to stock up on as soon as possible. It’s a superhydrophobic spray that causes liquids, ice, dirt, bacteria and basically everything else to simply roll right off of treated surfaces. It keeps clothes and shoes clean, but that’s not the limit of NeverWet’s talents. It can also keep house siding clean, prevent rust on outdoor equipment and keep bathrooms free of bacteria. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...eflexion-1.jpg Protecting yourself from daily bumps and bruises will be easier in the future when all of your clothes are made of Deflexion. This futuristic material is light and flexible like regular fabric ordinarily, but when hit with an impact it suddenly becomes as tough as body armor. If a rogue baseball comes flying at you during a game, for example, the fabric instantly hardens at the point of impact to protect you from the force. Then just as quickly, it goes back to being regular, flexible fabric. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...arboform-2.jpg Petroleum-based plastics are used in so many of the products we enjoy every day, but they are not at all healthy for the planet. A new type of plastic-like material called Arboform could be used in the same ways as traditional plastics but with a much lower environmental impact. Arboform is made of waste products left over from the production of paper mixed with natural resins. It’s just as durable and versatile as petroleum-based plastics but it’s biodegradable and recyclable. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...on-glass-2.jpg Spray-on liquid glass has been available in Germany and the UK for a few years, but it still hasn’t gained worldwide popularity. At first this seems puzzling, since the ultra-thin silicon dioxide coating could do everything from making clothing stain-proof to keeping restaurant and hospital surfaces sterile for months. But perhaps one reason that this product is not yet in every home in the developed world is that it makes cleaning products nearly obsolete. This impressive quality may be enough to keep some stores from agreeing to stock it since one bottle of liquid glass could keep surfaces protected for up to a year. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-bone-glue.jpg The unusual structure above is home to a colony of sandcastle worms, a type of marine worm that secretes glue to build complex underwater structures. A synthetic version of this glue could one day take the place of metal rods and pins in people who experience severe bone breaks. Rather than pinning the pieces of bone back together, doctors could use this biological glue to hold the shards in shape and let them mend. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...g-concrete.jpg Cracks in sidewalks, streets and concrete buildings are not just unsightly; they’re downright dangerous. One proposed solution is to do away with repair crews in favor of self-healing concrete. There are several types under development, but this one is called BacillaFilla after the type of bacteria used to “grow” new concrete in cracks. Using quorum sensing to figure out when they reach the bottom of a crack, the bacteria form quick and sturdy repairs that can prolong the life of the damaged concrete. Want More? Tinshed: Home Rebuilt from Shreds of Scrappy Shack
معماری Tinshed: Home Rebuilt from Shreds of Scrappy Shack [ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ] http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...l-building.jpg In a sleepy suburb of Sydney, Australia, long since taken over by mainly-one-story houses, sat a disused metal-sided shed. An ad hod affair, it was a rare leftover of what was once an industrial neighborhood, destined for demolition but instead converted into a strange new home. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...etal-house.jpg The newly-reconstituted building dubbed ‘Tinshed’ by Raffaello Rosselli (images by Mark Syke) is made from the metal of the old abandonment. It is still pockmarked, with a haphazard surface that slips between gray, green, white and red – its panels overlapping in odd and seemingly chaotic patchwork patterns. Now, however, it these frame a few more oddities, like windows for the first time in the site’s life. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...junk-shack.jpg Inside, the building has immaculate flat white walls and crisp curved surfaces, reflecting its fresh purpose as a studio (on the first floor) dwelling and office space (on the second level). The juxtaposition of interior and exterior is fitting, as the entire structure is itself a strange addition to its surroundings. Want More? معماری Earthscraper: Inverted Pyramid Spans 1000 Vertical Feet [ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ] http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...nderground.jpg Skyscrapers are the traditional small-footprint solution for growing square footage in big cities, but what are developers to do in growing places like Mexico City where new building construction is limited to just ten stories tall? http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-city-park.jpg The only option, of course, is to reverse direction: build down instead of up. This his earth-scraper design by BKNR Arquitectura features a cental lightwell that doubles as a layered park, bringing illumination, ventilation and living greenery into the depths of the building. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ical-model.jpg Since the ‘base’ of the structure is an open void rather than a filled volume, the existing city square is maintained – it becomes a transparent platform, effectively, adding dimension without subtracting functionality. This configuration provides not only a window to the world below that you can also walk on, still also allows for public gatherings, music festivals, open exhibitions, marches and parades. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...d-building.jpg Below, the extensive building has multiple floors each of housing, shopping and office spaces, all arrayed around the exterior with views that face in rather than out – another inversion of expectations and conventions. Alternative Landmarks: 12 Monuments As They Almost Were
معماری Alternative Landmarks: 12 Monuments As They Almost Were [ By Steph in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ] http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ments-Main.jpg The Sydney Opera House might have been little more than a squat concrete building resembling a factory, and a visit to the statue of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial could have required scaling a massive stepped pyramid. Ranging from close second-place finishes in design competitions to proposals that were little more than pipe dreams, these alternative designs for 12 major iconic landmarks around the world represent radical departures from the monuments we’re accustomed to. Sydney Opera House http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...pera-House.jpg (images via: new world wonders, wikimedia commons) The Sydney Opera House is one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, with a dramatic series of vaults rising from the ground along Sydney Harbour. But Danish architect Jørn Utzon’s now-iconic design was controversial when it was first proposed in 1957, and the design that came in second place may have been more palatable to the public. American architect Joseph Marzella’s design was rather industrial in its appearance, but didn’t seem quite so out there. It’s hard to imagine the magnificent performing arts venue looking so squat and dull. Triumphal Elephant in Place of Paris’ Arc de Triomphe http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...elephant-2.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...omphe-Real.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...Elephant-1.jpg (images via: wikimedia commons) In place of one of Paris’ most famous monuments, the Arc de Triomphe, could have been a three-story elephant monument with a spiral staircase in the underbelly leading to the pinnacle. 18th century architect Charles Ribart offered this monument for the Champs Élysées, complete with a cross-sectional drawing showing the intricate rooms within, but was turned down by the French government. This isn’t even the only massive, ridiculous elephant statue envisioned for Paris. Originally conceived by Napoleon, the imposing Elephant of the Bastille (third photo) was meant to be cast of bronze and placed in Paris’ Place de la Bastille on the site of the old Bastille prison, which was the birthplace of the French Revolution. A stairway set into the legs would give access to the top, and the base would be surrounded by a fountain. However, only a plaster model was built, as memorialized by Victor Hugo in the novel Les Miserables, and eventually the July Column took its place. Unbuilt Design for the Golden Gate Bridge http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...ate-Bridge.jpg (images via: pbs newshour, wikimedia commons) Now 76 years old, the Golden Gate Bridge is an iconic symbol of San Francisco, coated in literally millions of gallons of orange paint. The Art Deco-style bridge is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, beating many experts’ predictions that it wouldn’t last against gale-force winds in the straight where the San Francisco Bay opens to the Pacific Ocean. But this wasn’t engineer Joseph Strauss’ first design. The original proposal is markedly different, with a heavier look combining cantilevered and suspension designs. It was rejected by the planning committee. Lincoln Memorial Pyramid http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...n-Memorial.jpg (images via: i own the world, wikimedia commons) Highlighted at Unbuilt Washington, an exhibition at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C., John Russell Pope’s Lincoln Memorial Proposal replaces the columned rectangular building honoring the 16th president with a pyramid. Anyone who wanted to get up close to Abraham Lincoln’s statue would have had to climb that entire thing to reach it. Some historians believe that this proposal was ridiculous on purpose; Pope wasn’t a fan of the swampy location chosen for the memorial, and may have created this and other absurd designs in an effort to encourage the committee to seek a new setting. Pope went on to successfully design the Jefferson Memorial. Pyramid Necropolis for London’s Primrose Hill http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...Necropolis.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...-Hill-Real.jpg (images via: andrew gough, wikimedia commons) Infused in the Victorian preoccupation with melancholy and inspired by the Egyptian spoils of traveler and tomb-raider Giovanni Battista Belzoni, London architect Thomas Wilson proposed a massive, 15-acre pyramid-shaped necropolis for the city’s Primrose Hill. The granite pyramid would have towered into the air with 94 tiers of tombs in honeycomb shapes and a base measuring 18 acres, casting a gargantuan shadow over the hill many Londoners use for picnics and looking out over the city. Churchyards were so crowded at the time, that graves were bursting out of the ground – but concerns about what to do with London’s dead weren’t enough to convince the public that a necropolis was a good idea. White House Alterations for President Harrison http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...hite-House.jpg http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...House-Real.jpg (images via: loc.gov, wikimedia commons) While he’s not nearly as forgettable as his grandfather, ninth United States President William Henry Harrison – who died after just 32 days in office – many Americans will struggle to recall any of twenty-third President Benjamin Harrison’s achievements during his tenure in the White House. However, Harrison could have made quite a mark. The first President to reside in the White House after it was wired for electricity, Harrison and his First Lady, Caroline Harrison, proposed significant changes to the complex that were never carried out. However, ten years later, Theodore Roosevelt made plenty of changes of his own, including the addition of the West Wing. Next Page: Alternative Landmarks 12 Monuments As They Almost Were Want More? Scooped: 12 Chilled Out Abandoned Ice Cream Stands
معماری Scooped: 12 Chilled Out Abandoned Ice Cream Stands [ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ] http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...eam_main22.jpg Cone in 60 seconds? Though these 12 cool abandoned ice cream stands thought they could take a licking and keep on ticking, they ended up just being licked. Twistee Treat Retreat http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...cecream_1b.jpg(image via: Telestar Logistics) Around 90 fiberglass Twistee Treat buildings were produced from 1983 until 1990, when the original company filed for bankruptcy, and about half the distinctive, cone-shaped buildings remain standing. Above is an abandoned Twistee Treat in Sarasota, Florida, captured in September of 2005 by Flickr user Telstar Logistics. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...cecream_1a.jpg(images via: Noahsgram, Yooperann and Facebook/Twistee Treat) Designed by Robert G. Skiller, many of the 28 ft tall and 20 ft wide buildings have been painted in a wide variety of colors; others don’t even sell ice cream anymore. Due to their unique visual appeal, abandoned Twistee Treat buildings often exist in an odd architectural limbo between being quickly re-opened/re-purposed or (thanks to their light, unit construction) transported someplace where someone’s opening a new ice cream shop – it’s free advertising from the get-go, without the expense of a sign! Ice Of The Beholder http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...icecream_2.jpg(image via: Latitudes) German Photographer/artist Sarah Ortmeyer‘s first solo show, “Sad Eis” (Sad Ice), included the above evocative snap of the closed Lasso Laden ice cream shop. Would it not have been easier to simply leave the shop’s seats inside and locked up instead of chained together outside, vulnerable to the vagaries of vagrants? Only Ortmeyer knows for sure, and she’s keeping that scoop to herself. Ore-gone http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...cecream_3a.jpg(image via: Swedotorp) Flickr user Swedotorp picked the perfect days (June 14th and 15th of 2008) to immortalize the abandoned Forest Park ice cream stand in all its faded glory. Located near Portland, Oregon, the stand would seem to be the right business in the right place at the right time. Unfortunately, the aged elegance of the mid-century style paint & neon signage indicates this stand’s time has long since melted away. http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...cecream_3b.jpg(image via: Darren Sethe) Flickr user Darren Sethe stopped at the abandoned Forest Park ice cream shop four years later in 2012 but not much had changed, barring the loss of a few more flakes of paint from the ancient sign. Sethe’s stark monochrome treatment seems to add a dash of timelessness to the ice cream-less scene. The Other Meltdown http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-conten...icecream_4.jpg(images via: Spike Japan) Kiyosato, Japan was a popular travel and tourism destination whose prospects weren’t improved by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the subsequent Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant accident. Among the area’s attractions was the now-abandoned One Happy Park, explored and recorded in September 2011 by urban explorers from Spike Japan. The abandoned park exudes an unfortunate and uneasy aura epitomized by the not-so-merry Merry Land ice cream kiosk just outside a ramen restaurant.
