Australia's deserts contain a huge variety of ants - they are everywhere and always out looking for food. At nearly 4 cm long, the bulldog ant is the biggest and is very aggressive with a painful sting. But it's not the nasty looking nippers that cause the pain - these ants have a needle-like stinger in the tail. Common in mulga woodlands, they live in big colonies under mounds of dirt that worker ants create when excavating their deep chambers
